About this trip

Wildlife Cruise: Sitka's Herring Feast & Whale Watching  Witness the natural wonder of the Sitka Sound herring fishery on an unforgettable, fully customizable 5-day Alaskan adventure aboard your private yacht with eight travelers and four cabins. Explore these teeming waters with whales and wildlife feasting on the herring. Our all-inclusive, personalized itineraries ensure a truly unforgettable Alaskan experience.

Your Cruise. Your Way.
This cruise focuses on humpback whales' return after a long winter of fasting. Experience the wonders of Alaska with the freedom and flexibility only a private yacht cruise can offer. We collaborate with all eight passengers to ensure everyone experiences their Alaskan dreams. Go home with memories beyond your wildest expectations and newfound friendships.

Wildlife Encounters Guaranteed
Experience the thrill of encountering humpback whales breaching and bubble-net feeding, bald eagles soaring overhead, and playful sea otters frolicking in their natural habitat. Our comfortable zodiacs and kayaks get you up close and personal with the incredible wildlife of Sitka Sound, creating an unforgettable connection with nature.

Go Where Most People Don't.
While most people sit on their balcony on an Alaskan cruise, you'll have the adventure to explore the remote islands and take in the wildlife only accessible by boat.

Delicious Alaskan Cuisine
Enjoy the freshest Alaskan seafood prepared by our chef. Hear captivating stories from your local captain and fisherman about the journey from ocean to plate.  Come hungry.

No Extra Day Excursion Fees
Most cruises require you to pay for your day excursion separately, but it's all included with us! This means less planning, fewer crowds, and a fun and more intimate experience for you.

Exhilarating, Stable & Fun
Our 85-foot expedition yacht is built for Alaskan waters and has stabilizers for a comfortable, smooth ride. If the weather is rough in one area, we jump to another bay or inlet to have fun and experience those hidden gems. We don't want you to be seasick, so our cruises differ slightly depending on the wildlife and weather. And did we mention that we are a darn FUN group to adventure with?

Fun, Local Captain & Crew
Beyond the breathtaking scenery, your experienced local captain will share stories, local history, geological features, and his life as a commercial fisherman and adventure seeker!

Please remember the animals are always on the move, and whales have tails, so you never know what will be around the next bend. That is the fun of an adventure.

Why Choose Us?

We take you through the ice, closer to glaciers, and travel across waters where others can’t go due to the challenges of the sea with our 85 ft custom expedition yacht. This motor vessel is built for Alaska with a steel hull for bumping up against the ice and NIAD stabilizers for a comfortable cruise!

During our 50 years, we have accumulated over 800 US Forest Service permits, so we take you to remote areas other charters can't go.

Our Naturalist will share the facts and history of wildlife and Southeast Alaska.

You will leave with a newfound experience of the freshest seafood caught from our Alaskan waters, incredible photographs, and, most importantly, the trip of a lifetime!

It was the perfect balance of daily adventures in beautiful areas of Alaska, relaxation and fine dining with amazing meals prepared by our chef extraordinaire Katie. Captain Shane personalized the trip and first mate Bart was awesome.

Where do I begin? The Alaska Sea Adventure was amazing. I enjoyed all of the personal attention from the crew, Katie & Bart, and Captain Mariah. Katie is an amazing chef and I enjoyed trying all of the foods we were served. She was very willing to customize and tweak according to our preferences. I will admit, there was nothing I didn’t like. Bart, assisted us with gear and shuttled us to our shore excursions. He gave us great instruction while shrimping. Mariah went ashore with us and educated us on the marine life and landscapes of Alaska. Her knowledge is deep and she was an asset to have on the trip. She skillfully navigated us through rough seas and always found us beautiful locations to wake up to. This is an adventure I would definitely do over. Kayaking was not available and the weather was not suitable for the airplane trip. I enjoyed seeing all of the wildlife, eagles, whales, seals, bear, moose, and the countless birds, including a Rufus Humming Bird. This was one of the most relaxing trips I’ve been on. Everyone gelled and that’s what made it fun!

Thanks for a wonderful time seeing the San Juan Islands aboard NORTHERN SONG – and even better with exceptional cuisine! Very enjoyable itinerary – and quite something to combine stops or anchor off Cypress, Orcas, San Juan (Roche Harbor), Stuart, Sucia – and fun to observe the animals on Speiden, all in 5 days / 4 nights! Highly recommended! Michael Sawyer October 3-7, 2024 San Juan Islands

My husband and I took a trip in late July 2024 with guide Dr. Adam Pack on Alaska Sea Adventures. We had an incredible experience and highly recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys beautiful scenery, upclose viewing of wildlife, learning about nature/Alaska and gourmet dining. This was our second cruise with Alaska Sea Adventures but the first time with Capt. Harley. Capt. Harley and his crew, Ryan, Katie and Bart are skilled professionals; knowledgeable on all things Alaska, in complete control of the vessel and always watching out for our safety. One particular safety incident was viewing an actively calving glacier. A National Geographic cruise had sent zodiaks with clients close to the glacier face just like our crew. Even though everyone's tendency is to get as close as possible for viewing, our crew knew to stay back and within 10 minutes of the Nat Geo skiffs departing, a huge serac fell very close to where those boats had been. They would certainly have been at risk to be swamped. Another example of the crew's attentiveness was our dinners. I felt embarrassed that after a few days, the crew knew what we wanted to drink at meals without even asking! What service! When not regaling us with their maritime adventures, Capt. Harley and crew taught us all about fishing for black cod, King crabs, salmon, etc. That was when he wasn't helping to shell King Crab legs for us. YUM! Capt. Harley's skill in finding whales and following them at a respectful distance was unbelievable. Dr. Pack was able to fluke photo over 200 whale encounters. We visited hot springs, polar bear plunged into a pristine mountain lake, viewed bears (cubs too) feasting on chum salmon at a hatchery and watched seine fishing. The size and design of the M/V Northern Song allows all 8 guests excellent viewing and photo opportunities, whether inside or on deck. All of us could gather in the pilot house to talk with Capt. Harley as we cruised. The dining area and living area was luxurious and spotless. Our individual staterooms were not "tight" and our private bathrooms easy to maneuver around. It was surreal to work out on an elliptical machine while gliding past glowing blue icebergs, whale blows and barking sea lions. The highlight of our trip was time with Prof. Pack. Despite his many academic accomplishments and his status as a world renown cetacean researcher, he is just a kind, clever humble guy. Watching him work with the crew documenting whale behavior was a privilege. Always ready to answer questions, give a nightly whale presentation while also gathering footage to make a trip video; his humor and upbeat friendly approachability really set the tone for the entire trip. Often small group vacation experiences can be made or broken by the other guests, esp. if you don't prearrange to travel with your compatible friends. Both of our trips with Alaska Sea Adventures were with a guide--either Dr. Pack or the photographer naturalist, Jim Nahmens. Clients that choose these specific trips seem to have similar interests and both of our groups were fun and interesting folk to get to know. This was our 4th whale watching Alaska cruise; all overnight small ship or guided kayaking trips. If you have guests of differing physical abilities, interests or ages, Capt. Harley's trips are a good fit. His vessel, crew and knowledge base is deep and flexible enough to accommodate everyone. Petersburg, AK is charming and highly revisit-able. It is certainly worth every penny and though it sounds trite, was a once in a lifetime experience. Our only regret is that we can't afford to go every year :)!
